Items Toxic to Pets
Today’s topic: Items Toxic to PetsThought I would list some of the common items we have around the house that are toxic to either dogs or cats. According to the ASPCA, these are the top ten items that poisoned our pets last year:
1. Human medications
2. Misuse of flea and tick products (insecticides)
3. People food
4. Rodenticides
5. Veterinary medicines
6. Chemical hazards
7. Plants
8. Household cleaners
9. Heavy metals
10. Fertilizer
The most common food/drink items that you should keep away from your pets are alcohol, chocolate, garlic, yeast dough, raisins, grapes, onions, nuts and fatty foods. A general word to the wise is never to feed your pets people food and you will avoid many problems. There are so many tasty pet treats out there that there really isn’t a reason to feed your pet people food anyway. The number one poison though it human medications and this can be avoided. Make sure to put all of your medicines in a place that your pets cannot get in to. If you keep your pills in a pill container, please be advised that your pet can get into it. My own story: I have a weeks worth of my medications in a pill container by day. My cats decided it was a great play thing and threw it on the floor during the night, breaking it open and spilling almost all the pills. My pets (both dogs and cats) had free access to my medications during that timeframe and I am grateful none of them ate them! I am putting my pill container in the cupboard, what about you?
