Introducing New Pets to Your Household

Published by kallicat under Uncategorized Edit This

comfycozy.jpg

Do you have multiple breeds of pets in your house?  I do.  We have cats and dogs.  Contrary to popular myths, dogs and cats can get along.  The biggest factor I have found is to bring new pets into the house as babies.  Older dogs or cats have trouble adjusting to a multiple pet household whereas kittens and puppies don’t know any different.  Additionally, it is easy for your other adult animals to be accepting of a new pet if they are a baby and not a worthy adversary.

I would strongly encourage slowly introducing your new pet to the existing furbabies in your house.  We do this by isolating the new kitten or puppy in a room that is off limits to the other pets in the house.  Slowly introduce the newest member of the house to each of the existing pets.  You will see their reactions and know if you need to do this process for a day or for a week or more.  Continue introductions until the pets are more used to each other.  Don’t hope for them to be best buddies right away, but rather they will slowly get accustomed to each other and over time, they may just become those best buds you hoped for.

Always supervise new pets when they are together until you are assured they will be fine if left alone.

How do you introduce your new pets to one another?

Naming Your Pet

Published by kallicat under Uncategorized Edit This

I know we’ve discussed naming your pet in a previous blog post but I was thinking about the names of some of my former pets last night and it brought back memories.  Orion was a beautiful orange cat who like his name suggest was a great hunter of mice and/or birds.  Rowdy was a 100 pound Rottweiler/Chow mix and looked ferocious but was such a sweetie.  Jazzy was a gorgeous Shepard/Chow mix and was always doing a little dance for attention.

In my childhood I had a cat named Scooter because she didn’t know how to run and simply scooted through the house.  Cocoa was our dog when I was little.  I don’t remember what type of dog she was but she was so sweet, loving and gentle.

I have had many pets and they have all touched my life more than I can describe.  Their names can convey so much, a memory, a visual picture, etc.  My current brood are the cats Killer, Kinki, Ciara, Frappachina, and Evil Z.  Our dogs are Gidget, Lily, Rusty, Princess, Angel Baby, Maxwell, Chimi and Changa.  On this fateful inauguration morning, my life is so much richer for the presence of these beloved critters.

Pet Bump

Published by kallicat under Uncategorized Edit This

I must admit since I have started writing a blog and posting online articles, I have learned a lot about new technology and websites.  One such new learning for me, is a bump website.  I received information about this site from another writer at eHow.  The site is http://www.auctionbump.com/pet.php.   On the site, you can submit your pet photos and showcase them for the world to see how cute Buster or Fido can be.  Personally, I want to know how Brutus got his ears in the air like that.

The same person also has an article on eHow explaining how to use the bump site to showcase your pet: http://www.ehow.com/how_4714492_off-cute-pet-online-free.html.  Take a moment to read his article and rate it for him.

While you are there, be sure to visit my article on How to Decide if a Rescue Dog is Right for You.

Pets and New Years Celebrations

Published by kallicat under Uncategorized Edit This

Happy New Year’s Eve!!

Today’s topic: Your Pets and New Years Celebrations

Some people have New Year’s parties with fireworks, popping party favors, and popping champagne corks.  Remember that these items can easily scare your pet.  Make sure if you are having a party that you have a safe place for your furry children that provides them with safety, comfort, with food and water.Keep alcohol out of the reach of your pets.  Spirits can be dangerous and even deadly to your animals.  Make sure to clean up any spills promptly.  If you decorate, keep your decorations out of reach of your pets.  These can be dangerous as well to your beloved.  You’ll want to clean up the party room prior to letting your pets reoccupy the area.Have the emergency number for your veterinarian on hand, just in case.  You never know when an accident will happen and although you should have this information at all times, over the holidays it becomes even more important.  If you have a PetSmart with a Banfield Vet Clinic located in the store, they are open on holidays and can be great in a pinch, such as when our dog had an allergic reaction on the 4th of July. So, enjoy the holiday and keep your pets safe.   If you are participating in festivities, please drive safe.  If you drink, don’t drive!

Winter Weather and Your Pet

Published by kallicat under Uncategorized Edit This

Good day everyone.  The topic for today is Winter and your pet.  Do you have an outdoor cat or dog?  Now is the time to make sure that they can stay safe and warm.  If you don’t allow these pets in your home for whatever reason, you will need to make sure they have the following:Warm place to sleep; dog house, cat house… there are lots to chose from and you can buy a warmer from the local pet store.  You must know your animals though because some will not like the warmers.  I had two cats who refused to go in their warmed cat house and preferred the dog’s house instead.   In that case, we put blankets in the cat house and removed the warmer.  They enjoyed that much more.Ensure your outdoor pets have fresh, unfrozen water.  Temperatures dip drastically in the night so check their water first thing in the morning.   There are devices to keep the water from freezing and you may want to check those out if you live in severe weather conditions.

Lastly, check on your pets frequently and if possible bring them in the house!
